WCPO: Man who tried to break into FBI Cincinnati
UC doctoral student and researcher explains motivations of extremist groups
The man who attempted to breach a Cincinnati FBI office on Aug. 11, 2022, must have known it wouldn’t end well for him, says Molly Broscoe, a UC doctoral student in sociology who researches the motivations and methods of right-wing extremist groups such as the Proud Boys.
"In many cases individuals who engage in these actions go into it knowing that there is a very high likelihood that they will die in the process," she said. "They know going in and its actually kind of a part of their driving factor.
Ricky Shiffer, 42, of Columbus, was shot and killed in a standoff with law enforcement after attempting to enter the Kenwood FBI. He had made threats against the FBI on social media.
Broscoe says the event didn’t appear to be as well thought out as previous attacks; noting that it doesn’t take a large contingent of people to conduct domestic terrorism.
