President Pinto shares important updates on pedestrian safety
Dear Campus Community,
I want to share some important updates in response to last week’s tragedy along Jefferson Avenue involving two of our students.
As we shared previously, our students were struck in a marked crosswalk by a vehicle speeding through a red light, claiming the life of one and injuring the other. The university has made a care team available to support both families. We ask you to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Please know that your safety on and around our campus remains a top priority. My leadership team is meeting daily to address these matters. I have spoken with Mayor Aftab Pureval, and the City of Cincinnati is prepared to help us take steps to enhance pedestrian safety on surrounding city streets. Specifically, we are working with the city to enhance crosswalk visibility around the perimeter of campus.
Below are additional action steps we are taking in the short term:
- Addition of crossing guards at critical crosswalks.
- Enhanced visibility of UCPD at key intersections.
- Working with the Cincinnati Police Department to boost patrols in the area.
- Addition of signage to promote pedestrian safety.
- Increased presence of mental health professionals, including in designated student housing units.
We encourage anyone struggling with the events of last week to talk to others for support. If you would like to speak with a counselor, please contact Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) day or night, at 513-556-0648.
Nothing is more important than the well-being of our campus community. We count the responsibility to protect your health, safety and welfare as our highest calling.
Sincerely,
Neville G. Pinto
President
