CCM alumna featured in PBS broadcast

Soprano Joélle Harvey’s sings with the New York Philharmonic in a recorded concert

To celebrate its return to the newly renovated David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, the New York Philarmonic recorded a program of masterworks and world premieres to be broadcast on PBS. Led by Philharmonic Music Director Jaap van Zweden, the concert features CCM alumna Joélle Harvey (BM Voice ‘07, MM Voice ‘09) as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” The recorded program will premiere at 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, as part of PBS’s Great Performances series.

Originally from Bolivar, New York, Harvey has emerged as a notable interpreter of repertoire ranging from Mozart to contemporary music. In demand internationally, Harvey has sung roles at major opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, Teatro la Fenice and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Additionally, she is frequently engaged as soloist with symphonies such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.

Recently, she returned to Cincinnati as the soprano soloist for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. Next month, she will sing the role of Pamina in The Magic Flute at the Metropolitan Opera.

UC alum making historic waves

Christopher Bak is a UC Lindner alum making history. His gold at the 2025 World Championships was his third win and fifth time medaling overall. Bak’s achievements put him in the running for World Rowing’s Men’s Crew of the Year, a competitive award with only three nominees across the globe. Winners will be announced at the World Rowing Awards hosted at Switzerland’s Olympic Museum on Jan. 24. Not only is Bak in the running, but his coach, a UC faculty member, is nominated as well. Mark Oria, assistant professor of research at the UC College of Medicine, is one of four finalists for World Rowing’s Coach of the Year. The two have been working together since Oria joined the coaching team at UC back in 2017.
