STEM Goes Red takes over UC's 1819 Innovation Hub

Empowering leadership in high school girls through the American Heart Association

The University of Cincinnati 1819 Innovation Hub hosted nearly 100 girls all dressed in red from various high schools as part of the annual STEM Goes Red event.

The American Heart Association (AHA) launched the initiative to provide young women with insights into the possibilities and potential they possess to make a real impact on the world around them through STEM careers.

“The 1819 Innovation Hub was such a great spot for the event,” said Stephanie Lambdin, development director for Greater Cincinnati AHA. “It’s great to show these high school students the benefits of going to college at a school that really helps them with their future STEM career field.”

Attendees learned about a variety of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics from female professionals. Following the Innovation Hub event, students headed to UC’s main campus for a tour.

Why it’s important

Technology is playing an increasingly central role in our lives, and the pace of advancement has created a significant demand for STEM positions. However, women — especially women of color — make up only a small fraction of scientists and engineers in the United States today. Out of 100 female students working on bachelor’s degrees, only three will work in STEM jobs 10 years after graduating.

Initiatives such as STEM Goes Red are intended to create a more equitable and inclusive future for young girls through role modeling, mentorship programs, workshops, events, educational resources and networking opportunities.

As the AHA notes on its Go Red for Women website, “Students can walk away feeling like a whole new world of STEM has been revealed — a world in which they can truly love what they do and make a tremendous impact.”

Cincinnati Innovation District

Hosting the AHA STEM students aligns with the mission of the Cincinnati Innovation District (CID). The purpose of creating the CID is to serve as a magnet for talent and a blueprint for job creation and entrepreneurship.

In 2020, JobsOhio invested $100 million to accelerate the CID's initiative of increasing the number of STEM degrees at UC by 15,000 over a 10-year period.
