CCM Play Series presents "Everybody" Oct. 5-7

Tickets on sale now through the CCM Box Office

Story by CCM Graduate Student Chet Rhodes

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Acting department opens its 2023-24 season with Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Everybody on October 5-7 in CCM's Cohen Family Studio Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office.

A modernized retelling of the 15th-century morality play Everyman, the play dives into some of life's most challenging philosophical questions. Viewers are whisked along a fanciful and bizarre journey of life and death, exploring the core of human experience. Humanizing abstract concepts, Everybody has characters such as “Death,” “God,” “Love” and “Evil,” creating a space where we can witness them interact with “Everybody” as equals.

Please note there is a content advisory for this production: Partial nudity (performers in underclothing), strong language, mature themes, discussions of death and dying, and performers interacting with audience members.

“What would you have to say if Death knocked on your door?” questions Rebecca Bromels, Division Head of CCM Theatre Arts, Production and Arts Administration. “Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins breathes new life into old philosophical questions with a show both hilarious and poignant.”

Filled to the brim with allegory, Everybody features a unique casting quirk: roles are reassigned by lottery at the start of each show. Mirroring the randomness of life, this means that the show will never be the same twice.

It also means that each of the actors must be prepared to play any of the parts with barely a moment’s notice. “There are 120 variations of the play,” says Director Bridget Leak. “The anticipation is unnerving. You can feel the electricity in the room as each actor gets their role assignment, live, on stage and completely by chance.”

This daunting task is no match for CCM Acting students, who are sure to wow audiences with their emotional and authentic performances. Leak speaks on the excellence of this type of professional training, especially in preparing students for understudy or swing work: “You must embody all of these characters, their blocking and their lines, while maintaining your individual ideas of who these characters are without mimicking anyone else.”

First appearing Off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre Company in early 2017, Everybody was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2018. In addition to the cast performing on stage, CCM's production features stunning stage, set, lighting and costume design by students, faculty and staff — providing a space for everybody on the CCM stage!
