UC students return to campus for move-in week
Cincinnati media cover first look at residence hall for incoming students
Parents parked cars, loaded hand trucks with boxes and other gear as incoming students fussed with essential items they will need for their first big move from home.
About 5,800 incoming students are making residence halls at the University of Cincinnati their new digs. The education migration officially started with the first-move-in day, Tuesday, Aug. 20, and continues until this weekend.
Media from across Greater Cincinnati converged on the UC campus to speak with new students. One of them, Dillion Webb, from Cleveland says the transition to residence hall life was definitely a big deal.
“My parents are scared, but they're also excited,” Dillon told WLWT Channel 5 for an interview. “And they've been, like, stressing, ‘be smart in college, make good decisions,’ but it is a new chapter.”
The newly reopened Siddall Hall and nearby Calhoun Hall were among the star attractions for many families. Siddall welcomes students again following an $85 million 18-month renovation. The refreshed residence hall will offer 500 beds on 12 floors of residence hall space. The 112,000- square-foot building boasts new amenities including 5,000 square feet of fitness space, along with common laundry, common kitchenette and lounge space.

Nearby Calhoun Hall had undergone an $80 million renovation before reopening in January 2023. Calhoun Hall is UC’s largest residence hall with 16 stories, 13 of those serving as residential floors. It houses approximately 800 students.
UC has a dozen residence halls along with eight leased properties for students.
Carl Dieso, vice president of housing services, told Local 12 that move-in day went pretty smoothly for most students and families.
"All in all, we really expect families to see about an hour in their vehicle, moving, unloading, the rest of the time is spent enjoying with each other and the transition," explained Dieso.
