UC hosts 3rd annual ‘Athletics in College’ event

WLWT speaks with UC’s Jack Miner about student athletes and college enrollment

UC partnered with Cincinnati Public Schools to host “Athletics in College,” a day of activities for high school athletes considering higher education on Oct. 23 in Tangeman University Center’s Great Hall.

More than 300 student-athletes from across the district were on campus for breakout sessions on financial aid, academics, student-athlete life and a tour of the Cincinnati Bearcats Athletic Facilities.

Katrina Merriweather, head coach of the UC women's basketball team, offered a morning welcome.

WLWT was on campus to cover the day’s activities.

Juwan Jordan, a senior at Woodward High School, plans on attending UC and one day, becoming an attorney. The football player and track runner was among the CPS student-athletes who toured campus.

"I'm gonna go to UC to study psychology and minor in history," Jordan told WLWT.

Jordan says the partnership between CPS and UC makes his future at UC a strong possibility.

"Immaculate honestly, it's like a giant pipeline, that if you go to CPS schools, UC is already right there,” says Jordan. “They already have the connections set up for you to go to UC.”

Jack Miner, vice provost for enrollment management, says the annual athletics event helps students think beyond the field or the court to see themselves in the college classroom.

“The partnership with CPS athletics is one of the greatest connections between UC and CPS,” says Miner. “We look at these students and know that there are future legends in this crowd. So many students see high school sports as a pathway to college, we are trying to show them how that pathway is there whether they play a sport in college or not.

“This is a great reminder of everything that happens behind the scenes to support student athletes — from athletic trainers, to coaches, to the business of athletics. These students are getting a chance to see how their passion can become a career in a multitude of ways.”
