Monica Turner elected chair of UC's Board of Trustees
With completion of Phil Collins' term as chair, Monica Turner has been elected UC’s new board chair
The University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees elected officers during its Dec. 17, 2024, meeting, and Monica Turner was unanimously elected chair for 2025. Gregory Hartmann will serve as vice-chair, and Jill McGruder will return as secretary. Their terms in these new roles began Jan. 1, 2025. Turner replaces Phil Collins, who completed two years as chair.
During Collins’ tenure, UC:
- Welcomed its largest-ever first-year class and enjoyed overall record-setting enrollment, which now exceeds 53,000 students.
- Joined the Big 12.
- Celebrated a record $699 million in external research funding.
- Opened Clifton Court Hall and new Blood Cancer Healing Center.
- Completed $2.19 billion Next, Now campaign.

Monica Turner is President, North America, for Procter & Gamble (P&G). She leads P&G’s North America business, the company’s largest and most profitable region which accounts for 50% of net sales. Turner has a track record of delivering transformational results in businesses, organizations and the consumer packaged goods industry.
Turner joined the UC Board in 2018 and was appointed vice chair in 2024. During this time, the university made significant progress in its “Next Lives Here” strategic direction, with a focus on innovation, impact and student success. Notable advancements include enhanced interdisciplinary research, expanded partnerships with local businesses, and initiatives to improve student learning and career outcomes.

Vice Chair: Gregory Hartmann
Greg Hartmann, appointed as trustee in 2020, advises clients on complex strategic issues in connection with sophisticated public-private projects. He is a trusted advisor with 20 years of diversified experience as an attorney, former government official, and a private consultant for Ohio government relations. Hartmann, a former Hamilton County Commissioner, began his career as a Hamilton County prosecutor. He gained significant experience in the courtroom, handling hundreds of criminal cases in Juvenile, Municipal, Grand Jury, and Common Pleas divisions.
Secretary: Jill T. McGruder
Jill T. McGruder, appointed as trustee in 2021, serves as senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Western & Southern Financial Group. In this capacity, McGruder has responsibility for Columbus Life Insurance Company, Gerber Life Insurance Company, Integrity Life Insurance Company, National Integrity Life Insurance Company, Lafayette Life Insurance Company, Touchstone Investments, Western & Southern Agency and W&S Financial Group Distributors.

The landscape at Cincinnati’s historic Harriet Beecher Stowe House museum has settled in for winter, under a hard coat of frost and snow. But once spring rolls around, it will show a transformation, thanks in part to the history department at UC’s College of Arts and Sciences. The Beecher Stowe House, located at 2950 Gilbert Ave., serves as a hub for the community and historians interested in the life and political activism of the famed abolitionist. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the groundbreaking “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” while living there, and the home was a stop for fugitive enslaved people on the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War.
Portman Center gets DOE grant to improve civil discourse
