Switching my major to nursing
How UC supported me throughout my academic journey
By: Megan Morgan, Bachelor of Science in Nursing '25; Nursing Ambassador
From the moment I was accepted into the University of Cincinnati (UC) Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, I knew I had made the right choice.
Although I hadn’t realized until my freshman year in the pre-Physician’s Assistant (PA) program that I wanted to switch to nursing, once I made the decision I had an entire support system to guide me through the transition. Every advisor I encountered was there to offer guidance, explain the requirements and help me prepare for the shift. I truly felt well-equipped for the journey ahead of me.
Without their support, I wouldn't have known how to navigate such a significant change—one that made me afraid of making the wrong choice and concerned about adding an extra year to my college experience. Looking back, I wouldn't have it any other way.

The primary reason I switched from pre-PA to nursing was my passion for providing bedside care for my patients. I’ve always wanted to be an advocate for others, but I didn’t fully realize that until my freshman year in college. Initially, I struggled to understand the distinctions between various health care roles but, as I grew more familiar with nursing, it became clear: being a nurse means being a patient advocate, a compassionate caregiver and a source of comfort and strength during vulnerable times. A nurse is also an educator, counselor and problem-solver who offers trust, hope and respect to each patient.
Choosing a career path can be overwhelming, but UC made me feel cared for throughout the process. Here, I was known by name and felt supported from the moment I was admitted. The students I’ve met along the way have become lifelong friends and created a strong network to help me navigate the challenges of college life. This is exactly why I chose the University of Cincinnati and, the closer I get to graduation, the more I see I was right.
As a senior, I look back on all the experiences I've had throughout the nursing program and am grateful for the valuable lessons I’ve learned from each one. This degree is not only preparing me to be a nurse, but also shaping me into the person I’ve always aspired to become. I couldn’t have asked for more from this program, and I’m excited to see what the future holds. It has been an honor to be a part of the UC College of Nursing family—Go Bearcats!
