Op Ed: Tough-on-crime policies do little to reduce crime
Leverso authors article on prison sentencing with research review and personal insight
University of Cincinnati criminologist John Leverso authored an article on The Conversation detailing research on incarceration laws and his own experience with the U.S. penal system.
Leverso, an assistant professor of criminology at the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services, says that when states impose severe prison sentences it accomplishes the opposite of what they say they want — to prevent violent offenses.
Leverso shares a comprehensive research review as the basis for reduced sentencing, also using his personal experience as an example (Leverso was incarcerated for 11 years).
