CCM Percussion student wins role with U.S. Air Force Band of the West
Percussionist joins elite military ensemble, blending musical excellence with national service
Story by CCM Graduate Assistant Kierra Mykel
The UC College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) celebrates Master of Music percussion student Wyatt Hatch, who recently earned a position with the U.S. Air Force Band of the West.
"Being a member of the Band of the West is a dream come true," Hatch says. "It combines my passion for music with the security and opportunities provided by the military."

Hatch plans to graduate from CCM this spring, and then he will go to basic training in August. In his new role, Hatch will perform as a percussionist in the concert band, ceremonial band and popular music groups. He will also contribute to logistical operations, including equipment management and tour coordination. The U.S. Air Force Band of the West, which tours the southeastern United States and deploys smaller rock bands overseas, combines musical excellence with service to the nation.
A second-year master of music student, Hatch credits CCM's rigorous training and supportive community for his success. His experience with the CCM Wind Symphony and CCM Philharmonia prepared him to excel in professional ensembles, while lessons from professors like Rusty Burge, Adam Groh, Jim Culley, Kevin Holzman and Jim Feist equipped him with the knowledge and confidence to succeed.
Hatch's journey to this role included overcoming the challenges of his first professional audition. He recalls the moment he received the offer as one of the most exciting of his life, saying, "Sharing the news with friends and family afterward was incredibly joyful." He advises students to embrace their professors' guidance and simulate auditions to prepare for high-pressure situations.
