Update on student support services and spaces amid new requirements
Message to UC students
As we approach the end of the spring semester and look forward to Fall 2025, I’m writing to update you regarding student support spaces and services within the Division of Student Affairs that are impacted by the “Enact Advance Ohio Higher Education Act" (Senate Bill 1), new state legislation that will go into effect over the summer.
The most important thing I wish to convey is our foundational commitment to individual student success. We will continue to provide the resources, support, and care for each student to thrive at UC.
Specific to our four campus identity centers, President Pinto, university leaders, and I have been engaging with students, alumni, and the broader UC community to hear ideas and seek help in determining the direction of any changes and how they will be implemented to adhere to the law while continuing to prioritize support for our university community. We appreciate your patience during these active discussions to finalize our plans.
As we navigate these issues, we have listened closely to you, our students, and you have emphasized your interest in gaining new leadership development skills and experiences, along with coaching and mentoring. You have voiced the need for building community, and additional programs and resources that support you in your transition to college and throughout your time at UC. We want to assure you that we have heard you and we are committed to ensuring that our student support is robust and elevates the student experience and student success.
To that end, we are evaluating how we can enhance our student-centered spaces on campus, including the Steger Student Life Center and 60 W. Charlton, where the AACRC is housed, to promote further connections among students and strengthen our university community overall. To be clear, these spaces may need to transition in terms of programming but will remain in use for and by our current and future students.
As such, we are working to retain our talented and committed Student Affairs staff. In fact, we are developing plans to expand our team to address your needs and support your success. Our team has spent countless hours engaging with those most impacted by these changes, and we are passionate about supporting and enhancing the student experience at UC.
We look forward to announcing the specifics of planning details directly to our campus community as soon as possible — as we fully appreciate how meaningful our centers and their support are and have been to our UC community. As new information becomes available, we will also continue to update UC’s Legislative Updates webpage.
I wish you a successful end to the spring semester. Please do not hesitate to connect with any of our departments or staff across the Division of Student Affairs if we can support you. I hope to see some of you around campus this summer.
Congratulations to all of you who are graduating as part of the Class of 2025!
