UC names interim dean of College of Engineering and Applied Science
Marty Emmert takes the helm of CEAS as John Weidner becomes interim provost
The University of Cincinnati announced that John "Marty" Emmert, PhD, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will serve as interim dean for the College of Engineering and Applied Science.
Emmert takes on the position June 1, as John Weidner, PhD, transitions from CEAS dean to his role as UC’s interim executive VP for academic affairs and provost.
“As I transition to the interim provost role, I am confident that Dr. Emmert will lead our college with vision and dedication. His leadership will be instrumental in building upon the momentum and great work we have achieved together, ensuring our college’s continued progress and impact,” Weidner said.

Emmert joined UC as a professor of electrical engineering in 2018 from his prior faculty position at Wright State University. In addition to his role as professor, he has served the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as program director and associate department head.
Emmert is a UC alumnus, having earned his doctorate in computer engineering from UC in 1999. He earned a master of science in electrical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky.
He is director of the NSF Center for Hardware and Embedded Systems Security and Trust (CHEST) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, which is focused on working with industry partners to ensure connected electronic devices and networks are protected from outside attack. UC leads the collaboration with five other research universities.
Emmert has eight U.S. patents, and during his 26-year academic career has directed more than $40 million in research funding. His research, which focuses on microelectronic and integrated circuit hardware design, has been funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Air and Space Intelligence Center and the National Science Foundation, among others.
He also served on active duty and as a reservist in the U.S. Air Force from 1989 to 2015, rising to the rank of colonel. He has been awarded the Air Force Legion of Merit and five Meritorious Service Medals.
