UC students help to organize weekend medical clinic held at local high school
Free health care featured on local tv stations
Thanks to a collaborative effort among Remote Area Medical Volunteers Corps, the University of Cincinnati's student chapter of RAM and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Tristate residents had access to free medical, dental and vision care this weekend — no questions asked.
The two-day clinic and wellness fair took place at St. Xavier High School and served individuals and families who may struggle to access or afford health care. The clinic and the work of UC student organizers was featured on WLWT-TV News 5 and WKRC-TV/Local 12.
"We are offering care for anyone and everyone. No ID required. No insurance required," said volunteer and UC student Kevin Krebs.
This is Krebs' second year volunteering at the Remote Area Medical clinic at St. Xavier High School.
"In Cincinnati, it’s a great city," said Krebs. "A very vibrant city. But a lot of its population is uninsured and not covered by health care. They don’t have the access to care that a lot of people enjoy. And it's really important that we give them that access and the opportunity to get the care that they so desperately need."
Services were provided on a first-come, first-served basis and included dental cleanings, fillings, extractions, X-rays, vision exams, eyeglass prescriptions and even glasses made on-site. Women's health exams and general medical checkups were also available.
A total of 252 patients were seen throughout the weekend.
In addition to medical care, Anthem hosted a wellness and resource fair. The fair featured local nonprofits, health care organizations and a school backpack giveaway for families preparing for the upcoming academic year.

For UC grad Alex Apyan, his time as a student-athlete on the Bearcats’ football team has only been a precursor to a successful career that currently has him as an integral part of the Mission Planning and Analysis team with the Orion Program. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., and graduate of UC's aerospace engineering program, Apyan was a long snapper for the Bearcats from 2007-11.
