The power of mentorship in sport administration

An op-ed by UC's David Kelley appears in Coach and A.D.

In an op-ed in COACH & A.D., a national magazine for athletic administrators and coaches, David Kelley, director of the University of Cincinnati’s sport administration programs, highlights how mentorship and internships are essential to developing the next generation of leaders in athletics.

Kelley writes that professional growth in sport administration is not optional — it’s a necessity for those navigating complex organizations, managing teams, and upholding the integrity and competitive spirit of sport.

In the article, Kelley emphasizes that mentorship provides a structured yet personal path for learning, offering guidance and confidence-building that extends beyond technical skills. In UC’s undergraduate and online master’s programs, students are paired with experienced professionals who help them grow through ongoing conversations and collaboration, often leading to long-term professional relationships.

Also important is that internships give students the real-world experience needed to apply classroom learning in athletic departments, collegiate programs, and professional sports organizations. Kelley calls on administrators to view mentoring and internship programs as strategic investments that build stronger leadership within the field.

U.S. News & World Report ranks UC No. 4 in nation for co-ops and internships.

At UC, this approach has created a culture where students, faculty, and industry partners work together to ensure sport administration is not just a career path, but a shared calling grounded in integrity, purpose, and lifelong learning.

The program features an industry-leading experience through a proven curriculum. Interested in learning more visit the UC Sport Administration Program web page.
