Local couple uses royalties from children's books to give gifts to kids in need
UC alumni spreading message of kindness this holiday season
A local couple has found a unique way to give back to those in need this holiday season.
As WKRC-TV/Local 12 recently reported, Vic and Laura Troha wrote two children's books together, and this year, they are using the proceeds to buy Christmas gifts for Hamilton County foster kids.
The couple are both graduates of the University of Cincinnati's College of Allied Health Sciences and met the day they graduated.
As self-proclaimed "anatomy nerds," they decided to write educational children's books for their daughters. "A is for Anatomy" and "Counting Your Funny Bones" are now published on Amazon.
"We thought it was a really good tool for kids to not only learn the science and background of things, and probably even some adults get to learn a couple things, but then also the foundations of counting and the alphabet," said Vic Troha.
This holiday season, the proceeds from the books will be used to buy gifts for kids in the custody of Hamilton County Job and Family Services.
"I hope that we're providing an easy way for people to quickly just add another item in their Amazon cart," said Laura Troha. "The royalties from one book pretty much equal one toy."
The gifts purchased by the Troha family will end up at the Job and Family Services Toy Shop, where families can come in and pick up what they need to make the holiday special for those kids.
"I think for me it's more of just a reminder of how good it feels, and our lives can get so busy, and we just don't think or prioritize to give back," said Laura Troha. "It's just a really fun, easy, convenient way for somebody to feel good."
The Trohas also plan to collect royalties throughout the year to go toward more gifts next year.
