UC Graduate College honors 2026 Graduate Student Research Award recipients during Research + Innovation Week
The University of Cincinnati Graduate College is proud to announce the recipients of the 2026 Graduate Student Research Awards, recognizing graduate students whose research, scholarship, and creative work demonstrate excellence in innovation, impact, and interdisciplinarity.
These awards will be presented during Research + Innovation Week (April 13–17, 2026), which highlights the extraordinary work of UC faculty and students whose research, scholarship, and creative activities are driving innovation and making a meaningful impact on our communities and beyond.
This year’s recipients represent the breadth and strength of graduate research across the university:
Nicole Pek, doctoral student, molecular and developmental biology, College of Medicine — Graduate Student Research Award for Innovation
Zachary Ziqi Ma, doctoral student, business administration and accounting, Carl H. Lindner College of Business — Graduate Student Research Award for Impact
Karen Noda Morishita, doctoral student, environmental engineering, College of Engineering and applied science — Graduate Student Research Award for Interdisciplinarity
Pek, the first-place winner of the Graduate College’s 2024 Three Minute Thesis Competition, is recognized for research that advances scientific discovery. Ma, a Graduate College Dean’s Dissertation Completion Fellow for the 2025–26 academic year, is honored for work demonstrating meaningful impact beyond the university. Morishita’s research exemplifies interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating diverse approaches to address complex environmental challenges.
In addition to recognizing graduate student achievement, the Graduate College will honor faculty and staff through the 2026 Graduate Mentorship Awards, which celebrate individuals who support graduate students’ development and contribute to a strong culture of research and collaboration.

Kelly Merrill Jr., PhD, assistant professor, School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies, College of Arts and Sciences — Research and Creative Excellence and Impact
Brittany Allison, PhD, assistant dean for graduate education, College of Medicine — Professional and Workforce Development
Anthony Chemero, PhD, professor of philosophy and psychology, College of Arts & Sciences — Student Success and Access
Donglu Shi, PhD, professor of materials science and engineering and director of energy materials and nanomedicine laboratories, College of Engineering and Applied Science — Interdisciplinary Knowledge Generation to Practice
All award recipients will be honored at the Research + Innovation Week Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 17, from 3–5 p.m. in Digital Futures, Room 140. The ceremony is hosted by the Office of Research, the Office of the Provost, and the Graduate College.
