'Father of the Pentium' returns to his professional launching pad

Electrical engineering pioneer Vinod Dham received this year’s top alumni honor

When you consider the sheer breadth of the Pentium chip’s usage and impact, it’s fair to wonder if any University of Cincinnati alumnus has made a greater technological difference than the iconic microprocessor’s principal creator, Vinod Dham, CEAS ’77. That single breakthrough developed in the labs of northern California’s Intel Corp. during the 1980s and ’90s — the culmination of so much collective toil and genius over the years — ushered in a critical new phase in the digital age.

In mid-April of 2026, more than a half century after he arrived in Cincinnati from his native India to begin his master’s studies in electrical engineering, Dham once again boarded a plane on the other side of the world to journey back to campus. A year after receiving the Padma Bhushan, one of his home country’s highest civilian honors, for his contributions in science and engineering, he’d been chosen to receive the UC Alumni Association’s highest honor, the William Howard Taft Medal for Notable Achievement. His return to Cincinnati would reconnect him with the place that had essentially validated his abilities and aspirations, and prepared him to reach his potential. Beyond his reputation-making work in America, Vin’s influence has been keenly felt through his visionary cultivation of a Silicon Valley-like entrepreneurial environment in India, including setting up venture capital funds about 20 years ago to fuel the targeted semiconductor startup community and nurture India’s prodigious engineering talent.

Returning to UC was a bit emotional for Dham, whose success has largely been downstream from his “if this, then that” mental makeup. He came to campus in 1975 hoping — and then back again in 2026 knowing — that his alma mater’s superpower is its ability to alter trajectories and launch careers.

“When I walked this campus as a student, I believed I was here to earn a degree,” Dham said. “What I did not yet realize was that I was stepping into a place where individual drive and ingenuity find an ecosystem that nurtures the realization of human potential and, ultimately, enables widespread impact.

“The University of Cincinnati does not simply create graduates — it creates contributors; not just careers, but legacies; not just success stories, but stories of personal transformation.”

In the mid-1970s, India’s government mandated that travelers carry no more than $8 out of the country — even if they were on their way to graduate school in the U.S. While it wasn’t indicative of a literal rags-to-riches story — his family was what might be considered “middle-class,” and he had earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering back home in Delhi — Vin had the “legal limit” in his wallet upon arriving in Cincinnati to begin his master’s program on a full tuition scholarship and with a research assistantship. At UC, he quickly had his first meeting with his student advisor, Mary Campbell. She and Vin had been corresponding for over a year leading up to his enrollment, and she was about to give him one of his most memorable lessons right out of the gate.

“What she had expected to be a simple welcome meeting became a moment forever etched in my heart — one that taught me the true meaning of compassion, kindness, and human generosity,” he recalled. She told him that his assistantship stipend would begin only after he began his research duties. He told her about the $8 and his immediate need for housing, food, health insurance and other basics. Taken aback, Campbell gave him $120 from petty cash — a loan against his coming pay. Even before he dived into his rigorous discipline, he recognized that he had landed in a place with people who supported his dreams and would do both the little things and the big things to make sure he got his chance.

A touching way to say ‘thank you’

While Mary Campbell made a critical first impression on the 25-year-old Vin Dham, a more lasting source of support came from the man who would be his professor and mentor during this critical stage of Dham’s life. In fact, that support stretched from Vin’s first days at UC all the way through his April visit to receive the Taft Medal.

Recognizing Vin’s great potential and liking him from the start, Dr. Thurman Henderson helped guide his protégé through the fundamentals of cultural life in the U.S. as well as the marvels and mysteries of engineering on the ultra-micro level. Now 93 and renowned as a physicist, engineer, inventor and scientist, Henderson remembers Dham for his brilliance, short learning curve, and laser-like work ethic.

“He quickly took to the very hands-on approach to the lab that we taught,” Henderson said. “He innately understood what was going on. He could go into the lab and create some magic. He was so adept and mature that we did some things with him that we wouldn’t do with most students.

“Keep in mind, he wasn’t up against routine competition. The other students were outstanding as well. But he stood out. If we were thinking about some advanced work for a student, we thought of him first.”

UC’s Electrical Engineering Department had an important relationship with NCR Microelectronics in Dayton at the time.

“They were the only microelectronics company in Ohio then,” Henderson said. “They had 97% of the adding machine world market, but were also a leader in making business computers. They needed somebody, and we wouldn’t have recommended anyone else to them.”

Later, when making a presentation on reprogrammable memory at a West Coast conference as part of his NCR work, he so impressed the Intel Corp. representatives on hand that he was rapidly hired to become part of that company’s grand plans to revolutionize the microchip industry — an ambition that likely wouldn’t have been realized if not for hiring Dham.

Now comes the touching part. In Hindu culture there is a traditional act of profound respect, humility, and seeking blessings from elders or teachers. Called Charan Sparsh, it involves bending down to touch someone’s feet as a physical manifestation of surrendering one’s ego and acknowledging the wisdom, age and life experience of another.

When Vin Dham returned to Cincinnati to accept the William Howard Taft Medal, perhaps of equal importance on his itinerary was a quiet lunch that reconnected him with Henderson after so many years had passed. Upon approaching him in the restaurant, Vin bent down and touched Henderson’s feet, receiving his mentor’s blessing. He did the same upon leaving after the meal. Dham knew he would shortly accept his university’s greatest alumni honor, but he made sure Thurman Henderson knew that he shared in the success for which Dham was being honored.

Professional legacy: Innovation unleashed

UC President Neville Pinto was at that reunion lunch with Dham and Henderson. In fact, he’s a bit of an academic and cultural bridge between them. He calls Henderson “a mentor to Dham, and a role model to me.” A chemical engineer himself before he became an administrator, Pinto was an esteemed faculty member in UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science along with Henderson for 26 years. And like Dham, he is a native of India whose work in the U.S. has had extraordinary reach and impact. It’s hard to say which was more abundant at that lunch — the sheer brainpower or the collegial admiration and warmth they shared.

“Vin’s growing expertise aligned perfectly with skyrocketing demand for faster and more robust computing capabilities,” Pinto said of Dham’s early days with NCR and then Intel. “His work helped fundamentally change how the world works, communicates and connects.”

The advances that Dham spearheaded made computing more immediate, powerful and accessible, which inevitably opened the door to a dizzying jump in innovation across nearly every industry. Such progress could happen on an incredibly massive scale because the Pentium chip was developed on an incredibly tiny scale: Millions of transistors functioned together on a piece of hardware smaller than a postage stamp. It was technology and capability in which Dham had trained and become proficient in the labs at UC where, as Henderson described it, “The trick became making things smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller… At some point, the tool you’re using is larger than the thing you’re making.”

As Dham’s career demonstrated, when you pass that improbable point, well, you just keep going. Then the amazing irony sets in: The more successful you are at shrinking the technology, the larger the waves of impact you’ll unleash. Yet developing the “thing” was only half the achievement, as it would turn out.

“What’s especially remarkable is what came next in his career,” Pinto said. “After helping build Intel into one of the most important companies in the world, Vin turned his attention to helping others build. He became deeply involved in mentoring startup entrepreneurs as an angel investor — work that grew out of his pioneering efforts in India.”

What followed was the 2005 founding of IndoUS Venture Partners, an early-stage venture capital fund that would support the development of the domestic semiconductor industry in India, the world’s most populous country; Dham remains the firm’s executive managing partner. He also became CEO of Silicon Spice, a chip design startup he joined at its nascent stage, and he led its design of a VOIP chip. All of which only scratches the surface of his accomplishments, accolades and, most importantly, widespread impact.

Not surprisingly, Dham’s work has been frequently hailed over the years. He received the Herman Schneider Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000 from his college. He’s been named one of the top 25 executives in the computing industry, one of the top 100 most influential Asian Americans, and the Smithsonian called him one of “the Indian Americans who have helped shape America.”

“What stands out most are the reach of his work and the countless ways it continues to shape the world around us,” Pinto said. “Vin’s story reflects something we value deeply at UC: that innovation can start anywhere. And its impact can reach everywhere.

“He is, in every sense, a Bearcat whose work has changed the world.”

At the UC Alumni Celebration where he received the Taft Medal, Vin was enormously happy and grateful as he and his wife, Dolly, accepted congratulations and thanks from attendees and fellow honorees. His good cheer and humility came naturally. “He had a wonderful attitude and was well liked by his fellow students,” recalled Henderson from a half century ago, and Vin has remained grounded through all of his subsequent success.

In accepting his new honor, Dham paid tribute to his UC roots and the way his American alma mater had, through its faculty and facilities, “seeded the DNA” that fueled his imagination, innovative spirit, and professional precision — a transformation that began in the Electrical Engineering Department’s semiconductor laboratory.

“I owe a deep debt of gratitude to Professor Henderson and Professor [Joseph] Nevin,” Dham said. “They did not simply teach — they challenged. They pushed me to think deeper, to question assumptions, and to embrace complexity. Their exacting standards cultivated not only technical competence, but resilience and intellectual honesty.

“And yet, as I reflect today, I am reminded that no meaningful journey is ever taken alone. This recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to the mentors who guided me, the family who supported me, the colleagues who collaborated with me, and the broader community that believed in what we were building — sometimes even before we fully did. It also belongs to this extraordinary university.

“I am forever proud to be part of the University of Cincinnati’s legacy,” he said. “I’m reminded that the true power of an institution is not measured by its buildings or rankings, but by the lives it transforms, and the ripple effects those lives create.”
