Judaic Studies to Honor Bea Winkler
Beatrice Winkler, long time president of the Friends of Judaic Studies and former first lady of the University of Cincinnati, will be honored by the Department of Judaic Studies and the Friends of Judaic Studies on Tuesday, May 27.
She will be recognized for her exceptional contributions to Judaic Studies, to UC and to the entire Cincinnati Jewish community.
Bea is a true Eshet Hayyil, Woman of Valor, said Steve Fine, department head and holder of the Jewish Foundation chair in Judaic Studies at UC. She has been with us from the beginning. Without Bea, Judaic Studies wouldnt be near the force it is today.
No one deserves it more, said Dean Richard E. Friedman, director of Alumni Relations at UCs McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. Dean Friedman is chairman of the Tribute Dinner Committee. Members of the committee include Betty Benjamin, Judith Daniels, Steven Fine, Gail Friedman, Gila Safran Naveh, Bess Paper, Polly Stein, Alice Weston and Alan Winkler. The Beatrice Winkler Tribute Dinner is sponsored by the Department of Judaic Studies, the Friends of Judaic Studies, the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati and the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati.
The Beatrice Winkler Tribute Dinner will be followed by the 26th Rabbi Louis Feinberg Lecture, which will be delivered by Professor David Ellenson of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Professor Ellensons topic is: A Vision for American Judaism: Past Reality, Future Direction. The lecture will take place at 8 p.m. in Room 112, Lindner Hall (College of Business Administration).

Growing up on Ludlow Ave. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, Harrison Fowler had planned to enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Cincinnati. UC was close to home, and ROTC seemed like the right choice. But life had other plans. At the last minute, Fowler withdrew from ROTC and enrolled to earn his bachelor’s in Spanish, which meant he needed a study-abroad experience to complete his degree. He was apprehensive, but completed his requirement in Madrid, in a move that would change the direction of his life. Says Fowler of his foreign-language major, and his experience abroad: “Speaking another language opens up a whole other world and relationships for you.”
