African American Studies Professor Emeritus Remembered

Dr. Paul M. Smith, Jr. died April 30, 2004 in Sun Lakes, Arizona. The first full-time faculty member hired in African American Studies after the Department Chair, Dr. Paul Smith came to the University of Cincinnati in 1970. With a PhD in Educational Psychology from Indiana University in Bloomington, he was very important to the development of African American Studies at UC. After coming to the University of Cincinnati, he helped to articulate the department’s mission while he taught courses on Racism, Black Identification, and Interracial Relations. In later years, he focused on education and psychology, and did significant research on the personality of Black children in the rural and urban south. , he was recognized for his scholarship in guidance and counseling, and adolescent behavior. He retired from the University of Cincinnati on Sept 1, 1990.

Dr. Paul M. Smith will be remembered for his knowledge, wit, and ability to inspire students to stretch themselves intellectually and politically, to think critically, and to be productive participants in society.
