Nov. 10 Ceremony To Honor Veterans, Rededicate Bridge

The University of Cincinnati’s Army and Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will honor the nation’s veterans at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Veterans Memorial Bridge on UC’s McMicken Commons. Veterans in uniform, along with UC’s ROTC cadre, will observe the ceremony in advance of the Veteran’s Day holiday.

AMVETS Post 1963, the veteran’s organization that dedicated the old bridge in 1992, will rededicate the new bridge at the Nov. 10 ceremony. The UC pedestrian bridge was first dedicated to honor veterans in 1992, but was in a different location. UC Alumni may remember that bridge as the old Tangeman University Center Bridge. The new bridge is now a pathway between the south wing of the newly renovated Tangeman University Center and the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM).

The ceremony will feature remarks by Daniel Beaver, UC professor emeritus of military history, and Lynn Ashley, a professional educator, consultant and former Forest Park City Councilmember who served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) during World War II (1943-1945). Before she joined the armed forces, she was one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” and worked at Douglas Aircraft in Chicago. The ceremony will also include a colors presentation and the playing of “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Taps.”

Philip R. Tilly, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and UC professor of military science, says the Army and Air Force ROTC wanted to salute the nation’s veterans while students were on campus. The university is closed for the formal Veteran’s Day holiday.
