McMicken Student Stars

Reports of honors for McMicken students keep coming. Jerry Tsai, one of the recipients of a Just Community Awards was recognized for his service in the new student government position of associate vice president of special interests, which coordinates with five UC students divisions to explore the needs of the university’s special interest groups.

The department of geology boasts several award winners. The following organizations awarded grants to geology students: the Geological Society of America to Alejandra Bonilla, Nicole Davis, Kelly LeBlanc,Ana Londono, Utku Solpuker, and Ozlem Toprak; the Paleontological Society to Devin Buick and Chad Ferguson; the American Alpine Club to Nicole Davis and Jason Dortch,; Sigma Xi to Nicole Davis; and the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund to Austin Hendy.

Growing up on Ludlow Ave. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, Harrison Fowler had planned to enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Cincinnati. UC was close to home, and ROTC seemed like the right choice. But life had other plans. At the last minute, Fowler withdrew from ROTC and enrolled to earn his bachelor’s in Spanish, which meant he needed a study-abroad experience to complete his degree. He was apprehensive, but completed his requirement in Madrid, in a move that would change the direction of his life. Says Fowler of his foreign-language major, and his experience abroad: “Speaking another language opens up a whole other world and relationships for you.”
