Sociology Department Highlighted at Annual ASA Meeting

McMicken College of Arts and Science’s Department of Sociology was featured among the social science topics and presentations at the American Sociological Association’s 101st annual meeting Aug. 11-14 in Montreal, Canada. The meeting’s theme was “Great Divides: Transgressing Boundaries.”

Faculty and graduate students from A&S presented and facilitated discussions, with topics including “A Religious Garment Defines a New Generation of Women” and “Race, Sex and Recidivism.”

A paper by Rhys Williams, professor of sociology, and Gira Vashi, a research assistant at the University of Illinois, Chicago, titled “Hijab and American Muslim Women: Creating the Space for Autonomous Selves,” was presented Aug 13. This week, stories about their findings can be found on Web sites ranging from www.fashion-deals.com, a fashion blog, to www.upi.com, home of United Press International.
