UC Volunteers Honored for Service to Community

At a breakfast ceremony this morning, UC faculty and staff were recognized for their volunteer service to the community and the university. More than 300 names have been added to the UC Honor Roll of Volunteers for 2006. These volunteers serve more than 500 organizations, logging more than 4,500 hours a month, or nearly 50,000 hours a year.

At the ceremony in Tangeman University Center, President Nancy Zimpher thanked the volunteers for helping to build upon the UC|21 goal of Forging Key Relationships and Partnerships. "It really is true that ‘great universities need great cities’ and ‘great cities need great universities’," she said. "We’ve got to stop talking about universities and the community. We are the community."

In recognition of the many faculty and staff who volunteer to help children, the ceremony was highlighted by a performance from the Fairview German Language School Choir. Some 35 students performed an assortment of music in three languages. Choir director Katie Hofman explained that the common theme in the songs was friendship and brotherhood.
