Nominations Sought for McKibbin Medal, Hicks Award

Nominations are being sought for the college's top awards to graduating seniors.

The McKibbin Medal and Eleanor Hicks Award are given each year by the faculty to the graduating man and woman deemed most outstanding for their academic achievement, character and contributions to the university and the broader community.

Recipients will be honored at the A&S awards dinner on Thursday, May 3. The McKibbin Medal is a gold medal first struck in 1912 and the Eleanor Hicks Award, first awarded in 1974, is a major work in the recipient's chosen field.

Written nominations may come from any member of the faculty, from a department collectively, and from student groups. They may be sent to the Committee on Awards, c/o Sr. Assistant Dean Bob Fee. For details, contact Fee at

Growing up on Ludlow Ave. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, Harrison Fowler had planned to enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Cincinnati. UC was close to home, and ROTC seemed like the right choice. But life had other plans. At the last minute, Fowler withdrew from ROTC and enrolled to earn his bachelor’s in Spanish, which meant he needed a study-abroad experience to complete his degree. He was apprehensive, but completed his requirement in Madrid, in a move that would change the direction of his life. Says Fowler of his foreign-language major, and his experience abroad: “Speaking another language opens up a whole other world and relationships for you.”
