Pizzazz Proves Popular at National Conference
The praise for Pizzazz keeps piling up. Yolanda Coopers presentation, Advising with Pizzazz! Unique ways to Connect and Build Student Relationships, at the National Academic Advising Association Annual Conference was named one of the top 10 sessions at the national event.
Cooper is an assistant academic director of exploratory advising in the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences' Center for Exploratory Studies. Her workshop was an overview of the various unique methods that the center has developed to build successful student/advisor relationships and highlighted some of the innovative programming at the University of Cincinnati. It stressed the importance of making students feel connected with their peers and advisors to improve retention rates.
The National Academic Advising Association promotes and supports academic advising in institutions of higher education. The conference was held in October in Denver and was attended by more than 1,500 advising professionals throughout the country and featured more than 200 workshops related to academic advising.

Growing up on Ludlow Ave. in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Clifton, Harrison Fowler had planned to enroll in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Cincinnati. UC was close to home, and ROTC seemed like the right choice. But life had other plans. At the last minute, Fowler withdrew from ROTC and enrolled to earn his bachelor’s in Spanish, which meant he needed a study-abroad experience to complete his degree. He was apprehensive, but completed his requirement in Madrid, in a move that would change the direction of his life. Says Fowler of his foreign-language major, and his experience abroad: “Speaking another language opens up a whole other world and relationships for you.”
