Volunteers Needed for August Active Shooter Exercises

The University of Cincinnati Police Department will conduct active shooter drills on the Clifton, Blue Ash and Clermont campuses in August. Volunteers are needed for the Blue Ash and Clermont exercises.

Drills are scheduled for:

  • Sunday, August 11: 10:30 a.m. at Daniels Hall on the Clifton campus
  • Tuesday, August 13: 1:30 p.m. at Blue Ash campus
  • Sunday, August 25: 10:00 a.m. on Clermont campus

“These exercises, based on an active shooter scenario, are conducted as part of our preparedness for any potential act of violence which might occur on our campus,” said Interim Police Chief Jeff Corcoran.

As part of the exercise process, Corcoran said, there will be emergency announcements made in and around the affected buildings, activities by role players, and response by police officers and external fire departments.  Prior to the exercise beginning, an announcement will be made to building occupants, and signage will be posted outside, alerting anyone nearby that this is an exercise. The UC Police Department has staged active shooter drills annually in different buildings since 2008.

UC Police need volunteers as role players for the drills at the regional campuses. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Faculty, staff and students from all campuses may participate and should wear old clothing and gym shoes. Anyone with questions or to volunteer may contact Pia Washington at 513-556-4986 or pia.washington@uc.edu

“The University of Cincinnati encourages students, faculty and staff to report potential indicators of violent behavior to the Threat Assessment Committee through Public Safety, Judicial Affairs, or Health Services,” Corcoran said. “If you observe an act of violence, or an armed person on campus, please call 911 from any campus phone, or 556-1111 from a cellular phone.”
