UC s African American Cultural and Resource Center Announces Its Tyehimba Celebration

UC’s 23rd annual Tyehimba Cultural Graduation Celebration will mark the success of 115 spring graduates.

Tyehimba will take place at 7 p.m., Friday, April 25, in the Great Hall of Tangeman University Center.

The annual Afrocentric graduation ceremony is presented by the African American Cultural and Resource Center.  The ceremony will be celebrating students achieving associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

“The cultural celebration is an expression of thanks to family, friends and the community for guiding our students to successfully completing their college degree,” says Tamar Kinebrew, program coordinator for the AACRC.

This year’s celebration is themed, “Stand Your Ground.” The keynote speaker is Kenneth Ghee, associate professor of Africana Studies in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and co-director of the college’s Putting Retention 1st in the Zest for Excellence Program (PR1ZE). The program is a faculty and administration support initiative for historically underrepresented students.

The AACRC at UC

first opened in September 1991 to create a welcoming environment for African-American students as they adjust to college life. The center reopened in January 2013 after undergoing six months of renovations totaling $325,000 that more than doubled the center’s original capacity.
