UC Program Provided IT Senior with Experience Working Overseas

Cincinnatian and Hughes High School graduate, Jasmine Hix will be graduating from the University of Cincinnati on April 26 with a bachelor's of science in information technology.

Hix’s interest in IT stems from her secondary education at Hughes. “I attended the Hughes High School Teaching and Technology program and learned how to create my own website. I won an award for most creative website for my senior project, which made me think about pursuing website design.”

As an IT student, Hix was enrolled in UC's top-ranked cooperative education program in the

Division of Professional Practice and Experiential Learning

. The university’s

cooperative education program

alternates full-time terms of academic study and paid work experience. Hix completed four co-op experiences during her undergraduate career, co-oping at Chiquita Brands International; CAST-FAB Technologies, Inc., for two semesters; and VEEV Interactive in Singapore via UC's Singapore Experience

.

One of her greatest undergraduate accomplishments was being awarded the 2013 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The scholarship program provides grants to U.S. citizen undergraduate students with financial constraints, the means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Hix was one of two University of Cincinnati students to receive this prestigious scholarship in 2013.

“The Gilman Scholarship was a tremendous help. I would not have been able to participate in

The Singapore Experience

if it wasn't for the scholarship. Between the cost of the program and airfare, it would have been too expensive. My goal was to experience my first long-term study abroad before I graduated, and the scholarship helped me do so. Most students don't get a chance to participate in a program like this, and I am glad that I was able to take this opportunity and experience something so great,” stated Hix.

In addition to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, Hix was also a recipient of a Freeman Foundation Scholarship which also assisted with the expenses of

The Singapore Experience

In Singapore, Hix had the opportunity to work for VEEV Interactive, a multinational corporation focusing on creating interactive learning solutions for early childhood and secondary education levels. Hix had the opportunity to work with the software development team during her internship and contributed to the creation of a digital story book using flash and a learning application for fifth grade and up students.

“Jasmine is a very determined young woman,” stated Darnice Langford, associate director and professor of professional practice, who manages The Singapore Experience. “It was a pleasure to observe Jasmine’s professional and emotional growth through her experiential learning. She exemplifies all that The Singapore Experience has to offers to students.”

Hix's combined exceptional experiences have helped her land a post-graduate summer internship in software development documentation working with senior software developers at CareSource.
