CCM Welcomes Renowned Countertenor Andreas Scholl for a Guest Artist Recital on Oct. 1

Scholl has sung at major music festivals, opera houses and with symphony orchestras around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Glyndebourne, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, among many others.

In a recent interview with Gramophone magazine, Scholl discussed his method for selecting the music that appeared on Wanderer, explaining, "I wanted to do a song album and the foundation for us was the Haydn songs, which I've sung for a few years and are obviously outside of the Baroque repertoire. From there we collated a list of about 40 songs from Brahms, Schubert and Mozart and condensed it down."

About Andreas Scholl
Born in Kiedrich im Rheingau, near Wiesbaden, Andreas Scholl began his musical training as a member of the Kiedricher Chorbuben and later studied under Richard Levitt and Rene Jacobs at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Basie. His opera engagements include the title role in Giulio Cesare in Copenhagen and Lausanne and at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Paris, and last year's Salzburg Festival; as Bertarido in Rodelinda in Frankfurt, at Glyndebourne and for the Metropolitan Opera, New York; and as Arsace in Partenope in Copenhagen and in concert at the BBC Proms.

He has appeared in concert with the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Dresdner Philharmonie, the Akademie fi.ir Alte Musik Berlin, the Freiburger Barockorchester and the English qoncert. In 2005 he was the first countertenor to perform at the last night of the BBC Proms.

This season his engagements have included Bach's St Matthew Passion conducted by Stephen Cleobury at King's College, Cambridge; Bach cantatas with Concentus Musicus under Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Vienna Musikverein; and a recital tour of Europe and North America, including appearances at the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Wigmore Hall and the Lincoln Center, New York. Scholl has recorded an extensive discography for Decca, Deutsche Grammophon and Harmonia Mundi; his most recent release, Wanderer, features German Lied. His awards include the ECHO Klassik Award in 1999 and 2005, the Prix de l'Union de la Presse Musicale Beige and an Edison Award.

About Tamar Halperin
Tamar Halperin was born in Israel and studied at Tel Aviv University, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Basel, and the Juilliard School, New York, where she obtained a doctorate in 2009. Her repertory focuses on Baroque music, but she is also an enthusiastic performer of classical and contemporary music: she composes, arranges and performs popular, jazz and electronic music, some of which has been recorded on the Act and Garage labels. Her collaboration with the jazz pianist Michael Wollny led to the album Wunderkammer, which won the 2010 ECHO Klassik Award for best piano album.

As a soloist and chamber musician she has performed in Israel, Europe, United States, Mexico, Japan, Korea and Australia, appearing in many prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall, New York, the Wigmore Hall, the Musashino Hall in Tokyo, the Sydney Recital Hall and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona. She has collaborated with Laurence Cummings, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London-based Serafin Camerata Orchestra.

Her numerous prizes and awards include an honorary prize at the 2004 Van Vlaanderen Musica Antiqua Brugge Competition, the Presser Award in 2005, the REC Music Award in 2006 and the Eisen-Picard Performing Arts Award in 2006 and 2007.

Four UC College-Conservatory of Music alumni are named nominees in the 77th annual Tony Awards, recognizing the excellent work shared in Broadway productions during the 2023-24 season. The nominees, announced Tuesday, April 30, include Isabella Byrd (BFA Lighting Design and Technology, ’09), Shoshana Bean (BFA Musical Theatre, '99), Dorian Harewood and Leslie Kritzer (BFA Musical Theatre, '99).
