RevolutionUC Hackathon Returns Nov. 14-16

RevolutionUC

is a college

hackathon

, hosted every semester at the University of Cincinnati by the University of Cincinnati Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) student chapter and the

College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS)

. This semester’s RevolutionUC will be held in the

UC CEAS Learning Center

from

Nov. 14-16

, beginning at

7 p.m. Friday

and drawing to a close with an award ceremony at

2 p.m. Sunday

.

A hackathon brings together people who are excited about programming for a weekend, and they collaborate to build innovative digital projects. Fueled by a continuous supply of caffeine and food, entrepreneurs, designers and developers work in teams over a 24-hour period to create hacks and apps for Web or mobile platforms. At RevolutionUC, these hack creators are students. Projects will be judged based on creativity, technical difficulty, polish and usefulness.

Hackathons have taken the country by storm as of late, dawning an event niche that gives programmers the rare opportunity to meet for collaborative computer programming. As a testament to their ever-growing popularity, two of the largest student hackathons,

PennApps

and

MHacks

, brought together over 1,000 hack-generating individuals from universities worldwide.

And students aren’t the only ones who are displaying a vast interest in these events — numerous well-known companies such as

Google

,

Linked In

and

Apple

attend hackathons in search of future employees. Therefore, these events are increasingly being considered as a “Career Fair 2.0,” allowing students the chance to showcase their innovative handiwork to potential employers.

RevolutionUC — organized by CEAS computer science student

Jonah Back

, along with the support of computer science faculty — is being sponsored by:

CEAS

,

UCIT

,

CBTS

,

Scripps

,

zipscene

,

Intuit

,

Modulus

and

Strap

.

Through the help of these sponsors and the official student hackathon league,

MLH (Major League Hacking)

, RevoutionUC hackers will have access to work with some of the most high-tech hardware around, such as

Google Glass

,

Thalmic Myo

(motion control armbands),

Oculus Rift DK2

(virtual reality headsets), and

Pebble Smartwatches

.

UC successfully joined the renowned hackfest ranks with its first hackathon last spring. This semester, they plan to double in size as about 300 participants are expected to make UC their home for the productive weekend.

Is your team ready to join Revolution UC? Good luck, hackers!
