McMicken Alumnus Rated Top in the Country for Vascular Surgery Program
For the past three years, McMicken alumnus Randall W. Franz has led his vascular surgery program at OhioHealth to be ranked No. 1 in the nation for quality and medical excellence by CareChex, a hospital ranking organization.
Franz graduated from UC's McMicken College of Arts and Sciences in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in biology. Upon graduating from UC, Franz entered Wright State Universitys Boonshoft School of Medicine, where he obtained his doctor of medicine degree and completed his general surgery residency. After finishing his general surgery residency, Franz completed a vascular surgery fellowship at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York.
My time at UC prepared me for my medical career by providing me with academic rigor, excellent professors and campus leadership opportunities, Franz said. I was fortunate to be president of my fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega and was involved in numerous campus groups.
Franz is known as one of the leading experts in his field. Currently, he serves as chief of vascular and endovascular surgery at OhioHealth in Columbus and is the director of Grant Medical Centers Vein and Vascular Center. His clinical research interests include vascular trauma, venous disease, aneurysmal disease, peripheral vascular disease and stem cell therapy for limb salvage.
Franzs work has been published in a number of journals including: Journal of Vascular Surgery, Annals of Vascular Surgery, Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, International Journal of Angiology, Journal of the American College of Surgeons and Vascular.
In addition to excelling within his clinical work, Franz has held a number of leadership positions including Treasurer of the International College of Angiology and Institutional Review Board Chairman at OhioHealth. Franz is also an editorial board member or journal reviewer for more than 22 publications both nationally and internationally.
My strong educational background, solid training and ability to lead others contributed to my groups success in being named the No.1 vascular surgery program in the nation by CareChex for the past three years, Franz said. All of the attributes that have led to my success began at the University of Cincinnati.
