Biochemist Gregory Petsko to Deliver Lecture as Part of Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program
As part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program, biochemist Gregory Petsko will give a presentation titled Adventures of a Public Scientist in room 527 at Old Chemistry on March 2, between 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
Petsko, who is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, conducts research pertaining to neurological diseases such as ALS, Alzheimers and Parkinsons. A cofounder of the peer-reviewed journal Protein Engineering Design & Selection (PEDS), Petsko also authors a monthly column in the scientific journal Genome Biology on science and society.
Petsko currently is the Arthur J. Mahon Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and also holds positions at other universities.
Petskos TED talk, titled
The Coming Neurological Epidemic,
has garnered more than half a million views online and encourages more research surrounding the functions of the brain to prevent a future outbreak of neurological diseases.
The lecture is free and open to the entire community. The Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholars program also invites informal discussion between the distinguished scholar, the faculty and the students in a Q&A after the presentation and in separate seminars that will occur alongside the lecture.
