Sociology Assistant Professor Recognized for Impact on UC Community

Littisha Bates, assistant professor from McMicken’s Department of Sociology, will be honored at the Fourth Annual Black Girls Rock event hosted by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Beta Chapter. Bates will be the first University of Cincinnati faculty member not in an administrative position to receive this honor.

The Black Girls Rock event recognizes women of color at the University of Cincinnati who exemplify leadership and are committed to bettering the UC community.  At this event the fraternity will honor five African American female students as well as five non-student women, who range from staff members and administrators to faculty members.

“I’m so humbled and excited to be receiving this award,” Bates said. “I wasn’t aware that I was being considered for this honor so receiving it has blindsided me in a very good way.”

Bates joined the department of sociology in 2009 after earning her doctoral degree in sociology from Arizona State University. In addition to serving as an assistant professor in the McMicken Department of Sociology teaching both undergraduate and graduate students, Bates is a faculty affiliate of the McMicken Department of Africana Studies.

Bates and the other nine winners will be recognized at the event on April 10 in the African American Cultural & Resource Center.
