UC's Sigma XI Honors Scientific Achievement at Spring Mixer

The University of Cincinnati’s chapter of

Sigma Xi

, the scientific research society, will host its Spring Mixer event Thursday, April 9, on UC’s Medical Campus.

The event, which will be hosted in the Winkler Center (Lucas Boardroom) in the CARE Building (East Campus) from 5-6:30 p.m., encourages members of the UC community to be inspired by the 2015 Sigma Xi award-winning young faculty and graduate student researchers.

This year, the event includes a 30-minute talk by this year’s Young Investigator winner, McMicken Department of Chemistry Professor

Hairong Guan

. A junior faculty member is awarded the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award each year because of their distinguished research accomplishments in the field of science or engineering.

The four Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) winners will also be introduced at the event. Each recipient won monetary awards during spring semester for their research. Winners include Brandon Cook (aerospace engineering), Xiaodi Duan (environmental engineering and science), Emily Jennings (biological sciences) and Janine Sparks (geology).

The national Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 to “honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering.” The society has produced more than 200 Nobel Prize winners since its inception.

Catered snacks, free beer and wine will be provided. For directions to the Winkler Center, visit:
