Wisdom in the Numbers of UC's May Commencement

If numbers don't lie, then the truth is that the University of Cincinnati's Spring Commencement 2015 is another record-setter, topping last spring's event.

Take a statistical glance at the more than 6,300 students who have applied to graduate at the University of Cincinnati's Spring Commencement 2015, according to the Office of Institutional Research.

TYPE OF DEGREE

The class of May 2015 includes 6,335 students eligible to graduate. They are earning:

• 659 associate degrees
• 3,663 bachelor's degrees
• 1,564 master's degrees
• 296 doctoral degrees
• 263 professional degrees
• Total: 6,445 (some students earn multiple degrees)

GEOGRAPHIC BREAKDOWN

• 67 countries are represented, including the U.S.
• 48 states are represented.
• 4,841 graduates are from Ohio, representing 82 counties and accounting for 76 percent of graduates.
• 210 graduates are from Cincinnati Public Schools.
• 1,267 graduates transferred to UC as undergraduates.
• 1,345 graduates transitioned to UC's Uptown Campus from the regional campuses – UC Blue Ash College and Clermont College.
• 609 students graduated from a distance-learning program, and 4,742 graduates took at least one distance-learning course.

GENDER RATIO

• Female: 57 percent
• Male: 43 percent

AGE RANGE

• Overall youngest graduate and youngest bachelor's degree recipient: 17 years old
• Overall oldest graduate: 80 (doctoral degree)
• Average age of graduates: 26.4

ETHNICITIES

Minorities accounted for 13.7 percent (867 students) of this spring's graduates.

• American Indian: 0.2 percent
• Asian: 3.4 percent
• Black: 6.3 percent
• Hispanic: 2.1 percent
• Multi-racial: 1.5 percent
• Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander race: 0.0 percent (3 students total)
• White: 74.8 percent

INSTITUTIONAL AID

• 4,396 graduates received some form of institutional aid (69 percent).

STEMM DEGREES

• 909 graduates are in the science, technology, engineering, math or medical fields.

VETERANS

• 259 graduates are identified as veterans or dependents of veterans.

FIRST GENERATION

• 802 graduates are first-generation college students.

UNDERGRADUATE HONORS

• Summa cum laude (grade point average between 3.9 and a perfect 4.0): 184
• Magna cum laude (GPA between 3.75 and 3.8999): 351
• Cum laude (GPA between 3.6 and 3.74999): 435
