It s Big. It's Bright. It s Sticky. It s a Duck Tape® Work of Art
Duct tape has been one of Americas favorite fix-alls since World War II. From lifesaving repairs during NASAs Apollo mission to full-length formal prom dresses, this mainstay of enthusiastic DIYers has earned a reputation as a crafty American icon.
This summer, duct tape is transformed into uber-colorful, larger-than-life works of art at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). DAAPs Fine Arts Annual Outdoor Duck Tape® Exhibition features three-dimensional enlargements created by DAAP students from thousands of rolls of
, in numerous colors, designs and licenses. Professors Joe Girandola and Matt Lynch are overseeing the project, which for three years has been part of a DAAP course supported by
, the manufacturers of Duck Tape® brand duct tape.
Material can be anything, says Joe Girandola, Director of Graduate Studies at DAAPs School of Art. The Duck Tape® Exhibition inspires students to think beyond the typical materials and expectations of size. They learn that when it comes to material, its all about what the artist makes of it.
The theme for this years exhibition is Tropical Vacation, with duct tape interpretations that will include Travis, the Traveling Turtle, a large-scale pink flamingo, a sailboat, tiki bar, and palm trees, among others. These paradise-themed works of art will eventually join ShurTechs permanent collection and be used for the brands trade show displays.
This years Duck Tape® Exhibit runs Friday, June 12 Monday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on UCs Campus Green at the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Clifton Avenue, before traveling to the
12th Annual Avon Heritage Duck Tape® Festival
in Avon, Ohio, where 60,000 Duck Tape enthusiasts will take in the work from June 19-21. (For those who missed it, the trek was captured last year by the A&E Networks
.)
