Toronto, Canada Provides UC Students With a Global Professional Experience
This past spring, Nicholas Bauer, marketing student at the University of Cincinnati, participated in the university's "Toronto Experience." Bauer was the second student at UC to participate in this new international opportunity.
The "Toronto Experience" is an extension of the Division of Professional Practice and Experiential Learning's popular "Singapore Experience." The program is an unpaid, international internship program available to all UC majors, freshman through senior. Students that participate in the program earn cooperative education credit or academic internship credit for their work experience. ProPEL partners with Academic Internship Council (AIC) to offer this opportunity to University of Cincinnati students.
Through the Toronto Experience, Bauer interned at Shaw Media, the television broadcasting division of Shaw Communications. Shaw Media owns the Global Television Network, which broadcasts nationally via 13 television stations, as well as 19 specialty channels including HGTV Canada and Food Network Canada. Shaw Media was acquired by Corus Entertainment in April, 2016.
Bauers daily responsibilities included tracking audience ratings for their prime time newscasts across the five major Global News markets and tracking media coverage across external outlets. Other notable projects for Bauer included helping plan #GreaterTorontoDay, an initiative started by Global News to encourage citizens of the Greater Toronto Area to perform one random act of kindness and share on social media for a chance to win $1,000 donation to a local charity of their choosing.
Bauer recommends to anyone considering the "Toronto Experience" to definitely participate. He is thankful for the opportunity to preview working in a large media organization post graduation and feels the international internship experience helped to shape his future direction.
The work I did at Shaw Media gave me real life experience in a fast paced media environment. It helped me get interviews with a few very high profile companies and ultimately, an internship in Corporate Affairs at The Kroger Company, stated Bauer.
Being able to travel 7 hours north of UC and experience a new culture and the most diverse city in the world, on top of getting a great professional experience is definitely an investment in yourself that is worth making, stated Bauer.
June 5, 2016, marked the start of the summer internship program in Toronto, with six students participating from the University of Cincinnati. Students span from four colleges across campus including; College of Engineering and Applied Science, College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, McMicken College of Arts & Sciences, and the Carl H. Lindner College of Business.
ProPEL is currently recruiting students for the Spring 2017, The Experience Programs in Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong, Santiago, and Cape Town. To learn more about the experiences, students can view the program brochure and application through UC Internationals website: studyabroad.uc.edu
Students can further direct questions, to Erin Cohen (erin.cohen@uc.edu), program coordinator for The Experience Programs in ProPEL.
