UC's Marissa Pauly Awarded Statewide Scholarship for Professional Development

For most people, one full-time job is enough. But Marissa Pauly, program manager in the University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences, takes her academic work from behind the desk to in front of the classroom.

The award-winning staff member also serves as an adjunct professor, teaching business communication in addition to her program management work for the departments of communication, journalism, philosophy, anthropology and geography. Pauly recently received a professional development scholarship from the American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network of Ohio.

“I enjoy being able to promote and support the strong and diverse educational opportunities that the university offers,” said Pauly, who received her master’s degree in communication from UC in 2014.

Since she started working at UC three years ago, Pauly has dedicated her time not only to her work across disciplines as a program manager, but also to enriching her own education and the education of those around her.

Her experience made her a winning candidate for ACE, Women’s Network of Ohio, a professional development group that supports female administrators, faculty and staff from colleges and universities. Members participate in conferences, workshops and other activities that improve the status of women on campuses and throughout higher education. And at UC, Pauly works to encourage entry-level female staff members.

She said that entry-level women staff can be inspired and motivated to lead by developing new ideas for their current positions’ processes, using perceptive communication to effectively persuade and by maintaining and strengthening personal codes of ethics.

Through her efforts, Pauly has gained the admiration and respect of her colleagues in both faculty and staff positions. Cammie Hulett, associate to the dean, described Pauly as an outgoing and engaged staff member who shows significant interest in creating successful pathways for future staff leaders.

“Our college is fortunate to have staff members pursuing opportunities for professional and personal growth,” Hulett said.

Pauly will be presented with the $1,000 scholarship at the ACE Women’s Network meeting in November.

“With my ACE Women’s Network of Ohio award, I seek to create a platform where entry-level women staff have the opportunity to explore the dimensions of leading and finding self-efficacy in their current roles,” she said.
