IT@UC Office of Information Security Promotes Information Security Awareness Week, Oct. 24-27

Every October, the United States Department of Homeland Security sponsors National Cyber Security Awareness Month, a month dedicated to create a safe, secure, and resilient cyber environment.

Since 2009, the IT@UC Office of Information Security (OIS) has held an Information Security Awareness Week (ISAW), as a way to participate in National Cyber Security Awareness Month and spread awareness to the university community.

This year’s Information Security Awareness Week events will take place the week of Oct. 24-27 in Tangeman University Center (TUC), Room 300. The week’s topics will include personal security, social engineering, encrpytion and will conclude in a campus-wide shred event on McMicken Commons.

Ancient Maya blessed their ballcourts

Using environmental DNA analysis, researchers identified a collection of plants used in ceremonial rituals in the ancient Maya city of Yaxnohcah. The plants, known for their religious associations and medicinal properties, were discovered beneath a plaza floor upon which a ballcourt was built, suggesting the building might have been blessed or consecrated during construction.
