UC Press Joins Association of American University Presses

The University of Cincinnati Press has been accepted as an introductory member of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) effectively immediately.

Founded in 1937, the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) is a membership organization of nonprofit scholarly publishers located around the world. The mission of the AAUP is to “assist its members through professional education, cooperative services, and public advocacy.” AAUP advocates for university presses on matters of free speech, academic freedom, copyright, and other core issues.

“The publishing industry continues to change as supply chain and user needs become increasingly varied. Having a resource as specialized as AAUP will provide the University of Cincinnati Press with unparalleled support as we move forward with our publishing program,” said Elizabeth Scarpelli, press director. “The network of directors and press staff that we join provide a level of professional support and expertise that surpasses even the largest publishing organizations today.”

Announced in May 2016, the University of Cincinnati Press will publish in the areas of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary social justice, community engagement, and regional Cincinnati and the Ohio River Valley. Its mission is to cultivate and publish peer reviewed scholarly and accessible works of the highest quality for broad dissemination to the enhancement of the global community. This mission will be achieved in tandem with the Press’s vision to explore new modes of scholarship and to develop an innovative, sustainable infrastructure and workflow using the robust collaborative talents of UC Libraries and the university. The University of Cincinnati Press supports the Libraries’ vision to become the globally engaged, intellectual commons of the university—positioning ourselves as the hub of collaboration, digital innovation and scholarly endeavor on campus,” said Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian. “Membership in AAUP will provide an opportunity to collaborate and learn from other academic presses worldwide.”

"In the age of alternate facts, there is simply no greater pleasure than seeing the University of Cincinnati putting their resources behind hard-won truth—in the form of peer-reviewed, scholarly publications—by founding the University of Cincinnati Press. The Association of American University Presses is happy to welcome the University of Cincinnati Press into our fold," said Darrin Pratt, president of AAUP and director, University Press of Colorado.

Cincinnati joins 141 fellow AAUP members including 97 with U.S. university affiliations. Among the criteria for admittance to the AAUP are a commitment to mission (non-profit status) publishing, a peer review process and an editorial board. For more on the AAUP, visit their website at
