UC's Green Efforts Receive Gold Rating from Higher Ed Sustainability Association

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education has recognized the University of Cincinnati as a Gold level institution based on achievements in campus sustainability.

That award came as a result of AASHE Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) measure of sustainability performance.

UC was recognized for a focus on sustainability via academics, research, campus and community engagement, operations, grounds practices, transportation offerings, water use and more.

The university was given high marks for, among others:

  • Using campus as a living laboratory for sustainability.
  • Providing incentives for developing courses around sustainability.
  • Providing both undergraduate and graduate program offerings related to sustainability.
  • Supporting research and scholarship on sustainability.
  • Integrating sustainability into student orientation, student life, employee orientation and more.
  • Community partnerships, inter-campus collaborations, and participation in public policy.
  • Fostering biodiversity on its grounds.
  • Supporting sustainable transportation.
  • Sustainable water use and rain management.

Ancient Maya blessed their ballcourts

Using environmental DNA analysis, researchers identified a collection of plants used in ceremonial rituals in the ancient Maya city of Yaxnohcah. The plants, known for their religious associations and medicinal properties, were discovered beneath a plaza floor upon which a ballcourt was built, suggesting the building might have been blessed or consecrated during construction.
