UC Alumna to Speak at Town Meeting During National Uninsured Week

Cincinnati—Marilyn Hughes Gaston, MD, University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine alumna and former assistant surgeon general and director of the Bureau of Primary Health Care, is the keynote speaker at a town meeting hosted by UC and The Health Alliance on March 11.Dr. Gaston, along with several other speakers, will present “Caring for the Underinsured: Successes, Threats, and Gaps.”  The town meeting will be held in Kresge Auditorium in the UC Medical Sciences Building, 231 Albert Sabin Way, from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.     Dr. Gaston earned her medical degree from UC and has devoted her professional career to improving the health of the underserved.  She is a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.  Dr. Gaston became the first African-American woman to direct a Public Health Service Bureau.  She received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania, College of Podiatric Medicine, and in 1997, received a Daniel Drake Award from the UC College of Medicine. In May 1999, Dr. Gaston received the Scroll of Merit from the National Medical Association, their highest honor.  The UC College of Medicine named a full four-year medical school scholarship in Dr. Gaston's honor.  The first "Gaston scholars" entered medical school in September 1999.  In May 2000, Dr. Gaston was awarded the prestigious American Medical Association's Dr. Nathan Davis Award.
