Speaking of Women's Health Foundation Awards Nursing Scholarship

The UC College of Nursing is pleased to announce Leslie Stidd, RN, BSN, as the 2004 National Speaking of Women's Health (SWH) Foundation scholarship recipient. This is the second year that SWH has supported a graduate student in the Women's Health major.

Stidd, married with a three-year-old daughter, is currently employed as a nurse in Labor and Delivery at Good Samaritan Hospital, and is enrolled part-time in the Women's Health major at the UC College of Nursing.  As the scholarship recipient, she will now enroll full-time for the next three academic quarters, beginning Spring quarter 2004.  Women's Health practitioner students are required to earn 600 clinical hours, in addition to taking 500 classroom hours, to be eligible to sit for a national certification examination.  The scholarship support will enable her to reduce her work hours and cover increased childcare costs.  Stidd will graduate March 2005.

"Building long-term relationships with women clients, and knowing that they are receiving the education and care they deserve, are the predominant reasons I decided to return to school to earn an advanced nursing degree," said Stidd.  "I feel it is imperative that each woman be given the knowledge, in a way she understands, so that she can make informed decisions in collaboration with her health care providers."

Stidd, a 1996 graduate of the baccalaureate program in nursing at the UC College of Nursing, will be recognized at the Speaking of Women's Health conference held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center March 17-21, 2004.  In addition, she will be providing health education to the 5000 women who attend this conference in the Tri-State each year.

"We are especially pleased to be able to award this 2004 scholarship to one of our alumna," said Marcia Hern, EdD, RN, executive director, Community Outreach and Development, UC College of Nursing.  "The College of Nursing is grateful to the National Speaking of Women's Health Foundation for this scholarship, and especially to Dianne Dunkelman, founder and president of SWH," said Hern.
