Smith Chair Established to Honor Family Medicine Professor and Wife
The UC Medical Center is honoring Robert Smith, MD, FAAFP, FRCGP, professor emeritus of family medicine, and his wife, Myfanwy Smith by establishing a chair in their names.
The Robert and Myfanwy Smith Chair recipient will focus on the human aspects of medical practice - the caring, personal and compassionate approach to care, features that have become less emphasized in the recent past as great scientific advancements have occurred in the field of medicine.
Dr. Smith's distinguished career as a leader and innovator in Family Medicine spanned the past four decades. He came to the University of Cincinnati in 1975 to establish the Department of Family Medicine. He was subsequently named the first Fred Lazarus, Jr., professor of family medicine at UC.
Before coming to Cincinnati, he established the Family Medicine Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, one of the first Family Medicine Departments in the U.S. Dr. Smith has also played a leading role nationally and internationally in migraine headache research. He currently focuses all of his time on headache research and educational initiatives.
