UC Hosts Forum on Environmental Links to Breast Cancer

The role of environmental factors in the development of breast cancer will be explained May 14 at an educational forum hosted by the UC Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Center (BCERC).

The forum, “Looking Upstream for Environmental Links to Breast Cancer,” will be from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at UC’s Genome Research Institute (GRI), 2180 East Galbraith Rd.

Sandra Steingraber, PhD, author and internationally recognized expert on environmental links to cancer and reproductive health, will be the guest speaker. The program will also include presentations from UC experts on childhood origins of breast cancer, how obesity and diet influence the disease, and national and local approaches to studying environmental links to breast cancer.

The Cincinnati BCERC was established in 2003 to study environmental factors associated with breast cancer, while educating the Cincinnati community on its findings. The center is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute. One of four centers of its kind nationwide, the Cincinnati BCERC is a joint effort between researchers at UC College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

The Cincinnati BCERC works closely with local breast cancer advocacy organizations such as the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, Patterns Inc., Pink Ribbon Girls and Sisters Network Cincinnati, who are also co-hosting the forum.
