Body Donors Honored at UC Memorial Service Oct. 8

Family and friends of people who have donated their bodies for the advancement of medical education and science will attend a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at UC College of Medicine’s Kresge Auditorium, 231 Albert Sabin Way (formerly Bethesda Ave.).

The cremated remains of these donors are buried in a plot at Spring Grove Cemetery, which is identified by a monument with the inscription, “Through Their Thoughtfulness Knowledge Grows.”

Speakers at the annual event will include Andrew Filak Jr., MD, associate dean of UC College of Medicine; Patricia Brown, PhD, Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy; Bruce Giffin, PhD, director of UC’s Body Donation Program; second-year medical students Kevin Hartman, Nanette Lacuesta-Kimmel, Robin Petroze and Christopher Tangren; the Rev. Tom Faeth, of St. Williams Church, and the Rev. Robert Thomas, Friendship United Methodist Church.

According to Dr. Giffin, “The thoughtfulness of donors gives students an important educational experience that is critical in their training, and provides physicians and research scientists with the opportunity to gain knowledge that may prolong or improve someone's life.”

Two books bearing the names of all donors will be on display in the Kresge Auditorium lobby. The service will be followed by a procession to the monument site.
