UC Cancer Center Hosts National Cancer Educators Meeting
The
and College of Medicine will host more than 200 national cancer experts this week at the 39th annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Education (AACE).
The event takes place Thursday, Sept. 15, through Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza.
Chaired by Bernard Aron, MD, emeritus professor of radiation oncology at UC, the meeting will focus on methods for translating cancer research into practical patient care.
Five UC cancer experts have been selected to present research at the event.
For more than 50 years, the AACE has brought together national and international research leaders to discuss, develop and implement new education and research strategies related to cancer, said Dr. Aron. Hosting and presenting research at this meeting is a testament to UCs commitment to educating not only the next generation of physiciansbut also health professionals of all types who treat and study cancer.
Abdul Jazieh, MD, interim director of the Division of Hematology-Oncology in UCs College of Medicine, will lead the meetings first interactive workshopon teaching translational research as part of a comprehensive cancer care systemon Sept. 15 from 8:30 to noon.
Malek Safa, MD, and Zeina Nahleh, MD, both assistant professors of medicine at UC, will present during the second plenary session, Sept. 15 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Dr. Safa will discuss the lack of a uniform approach to clinical research training for hematology-oncology fellows. Dr. Nahleh will speak about her experience in the Southwest Oncology Groups Young Investigators program, a national training program for select young oncology researchers.
On Sept. 16, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m., Abbey Byrnes, MD, chief medical resident in the Department of Internal Medicine, will present information about the resident scholar program as a research training opportunity. In addition, research demonstrating the need for symptom management in outpatient care by Kyra Whitmer, PhD, associate professor in the College of Nursing, will be on display in poster form throughout the three-day meeting.
