$250,000 Donation Supports UC Digestive Disease Studies
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has received a $250,000 endowment to further education and research in digestive diseases.
The funding, donated by Gwendolyn Shapiro in memory of her late husband, Nathan Shapiro, MD, will establish the Dr. Nathan Shapiro Award Fund in the UC division of digestive diseases. It will provide an annual financial award that will allow a gastroenterology fellow to learn from outstanding researchers in the field and explore new areas of investigation.
The Shapiro Fund is especially important to the College of Medicine and the division of digestive diseases, said David Stern, MD, College of Medicine dean, since it will reward outstanding fellows and help them become leaders in academic gastroenterology. We are grateful for Mrs. Shapiros generosity and honor her vision of continuing her husbands work of advancing digestive disease science.
A 1937 graduate of UC College of Medicine, Dr. Shapiro was a physician with Cincinnati Digestive Diseases Inc. and had served as senior attending physician at Jewish Hospital and as a clinical professor of medicine at UC until his retirement in 1997. He died in 2004.
