Dr. Arthur Evans Named UC OB/GYN Chair

CINCINNATI—Arthur Evans III, MD, has been named professor and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, pending approval by the UC Board of Trustees.

Since 2003 Evans has been professor and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. He also holds the Robert H. Messer, MD, Endowed Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas Tech.

He will assume his new responsibilities at UC July 1.

A Cincinnati native, Evans is a 1974 graduate of the UC College of Medicine. His father, Arthur Evans Jr., MD, served as professor of surgery and head of the division of urology at the UC College of Medicine from 1963 until 1984.

“The UC department of obstetrics and gynecology has a long history of national prominence in productive research, teaching and community service. I’m really honored to be asked to come back to Cincinnati and become the chair of this department,” Evans says.

Evans is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine. He has held academic appointments at the Mayo Medical School; University of California, Irvine Medical Center; University of California, Davis; Eastern Virginia Medical School; and the University of Kentucky. He also served as director of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Medical Center and at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

“The combination of Art’s experience as a previous chair and chief of maternal-fetal medicine, as well as his roots in Cincinnati, made him the ideal candidate for our next chair of obstetrics and gynecology,” says David Stern, MD, dean of the UC College of Medicine. “His collaborative spirit, with respect to our valued relationship with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, especially the division of neonatology, and to enhancing the profile of our women’s health initiative, will be important factors in his success.”

“Approximately 30,000 infants are born each year in the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky region,” added Jeffrey Whitsett, MD, professor of pediatrics at UC and chief of neonatology, perinatal and pulmonary biology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. “In education, research, and clinical care, close collaboration among the disciplines of obstetrics, perinatology, neonatology, surgery, nursing and pediatrics, offers the opportunity to improve health care for both mothers and babies throughout our region. The new appointment of Dr. Evans represents an important step in assuring the best outcome for newborn infants in the Tristate area.”

Evans received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University. He completed his internship and obstetrics and gynecology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He also received fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of California, Davis.

Evans is editor of the forthcoming seventh edition of Manual of Obstetrics.

The UC department of obstetrics and gynecology includes 25 faculty members who provide patient care, conduct research and educate students, residents and fellows. The department includes divisions of general obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and gynecologic oncology. The faculty is engaged actively in patient care, education and research. Patient care is provided at locations throughout greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, including University Hospital, Christ Hospital, St. Luke East and West Hospitals, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mercy Hospital Mt. Airy, Adams County Hospital and eight City of Cincinnati health centers.
